Conjunctivitis
What is Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva - the thin, clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. It is a common eye condition that can affect people of all ages.
Causes of Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis can be caused by various factors:
- Viral Infection: Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and can be caused by common respiratory viruses, including those that cause the common cold. It spreads easily through direct contact with eye secretions, contaminated objects, or respiratory droplets.
- Bacterial Infection: Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can also occur as a secondary infection following a viral cold or respiratory infection.
- Allergic Reaction: Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain medications. It is often associated with other allergic conditions like hay fever.
- Irritants: Conjunctivitis can also result from exposure to irritants like smoke, chemicals, or foreign objects that can cause inflammation and redness of the eyes.
Symptoms of Conjunctivitis
Common symptoms of conjunctivitis include:
- Redness: The affected eye may appear pink or red due to inflammation.
- Itching: Irritation and itching of the eyes are common symptoms, particularly in cases of allergic conjunctivitis.
- Watery Discharge: Excessive tearing or watery discharge from the eyes may occur.
- Grittiness: A sensation of grittiness or foreign body in the eye.
- Swelling: Swelling of the eyelids and conjunctiva may be present.
- Sensitivity to Light: Some individuals may experience increased sensitivity to light (photophobia).
- Blurred Vision: Vision may be temporarily affected, especially in cases where there is significant discharge.
Treatment and Management
Treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the underlying cause:
- Viral Conjunctivitis: Most cases of viral conjunctivitis are self-limiting and do not require specific treatment. Using lubricating eye drops or applying warm compresses may help alleviate discomfort. It is important to practice good hygiene to prevent its spread.
- Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Antibiotic eye drops or ointments are commonly prescribed to treat bacterial conjunctivitis. It is crucial to complete the full course of antibiotics as directed by your eye care professional.
- Allergic Conjunctivitis: Avoiding allergens and using antihistamine eye drops or oral medications can provide relief from symptoms. In severe cases, your eye care professional may recommend stronger medications or immunotherapy.
- Irritant Conjunctivitis: Removing the irritant and rinsing the eyes with saline solution can help manage symptoms. Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can provide relief as well.
Prevention
Preventing conjunctivitis involves following these measures:
- Hygiene Practices: Wash your hands regularly, especially before touching your eyes or applying eye drops. Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes with unwashed hands.
- Avoidance of Contagious Individuals: If someone has viral or bacterial conjunctivitis, avoid close contact with them until they are no longer contagious.
- Disinfection: Regularly clean and disinfect contact lenses as directed. Do not wear contact lenses while experiencing conjunctivitis symptoms.
- Environmental Control: Minimize exposure to irritants or allergens that may trigger conjunctivitis.
